Childcare & Education NCFE at Hillview School for Girls

Course description

This qualification has been designed for learners who want to work in early years childcare and education.

Students will gain knowledge, understanding and skills across a range of key subject areas: the stages and sequences of child development, children's needs in relation to emotional and physical well-being, the role of the early years practitioner in maintaining a healthy and safe environment for children, safeguarding children and child protection, theoretical approaches to play and learning, the role of play in relation to children's learning and development, working in partnership to meet children's additional needs and child observation and assessment.


Course content

The certificate is comprised of seven mandatory units which cover the following key subject areas:

  • Child development from conception to seven years
  • Children's health and well-being
  • Providing safe environments for children
  • Child's health
  • Play and learning
  • Children's additional needs
  • Observation, assessment and planning

Students will produce coursework for each of these untis through classroom based learning, supported by experience in the real work environment.  There is an eighth assessment method which is an Effective Practice Study (externally set and externally marked) which is a synoptic peice of reserch or 'controlled coursework'

Entry requirements

General entry requirements to study three Level 3 qualifications for Hillview Sixth Form are Grade 4 in both English and Maths together with 3 other GCSE grades at Grade 4 or above (A*-C). Any students meeting the above criteria is eligible for this course.

Future opportunities

Learners can progress onto Higher Education or a wide range of supervised job roles in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors e.g. practitioner in day nurseries, practitioner in nursery schools, practitioner in reception classes in primary school, pre-school, pre-school worker, home based chilcare and nanny.


Further information

Students complete compulsory work experience in a variety of childcare settings, working with children between 0-7 years of age.

This course takes up only one option within the options block and so links well with several subjects such as Psychology, English, Health and Social Care, Medical Science, Biology or any other subject that is of interest to you.
