AS Level Sociology at The Rugeley Sixth Form Academy

Course description

Sociology is concerned with analysing social life and social institutions. Two common themes run throughout the course at AS and A2 level. a) Socialisation culture and identity; b) Social differentiation, power and stratification. Skills and attributes that students will gain from the course: •Critical awareness of social issues. •Analytical ability in their written work. •Knowledge about contemporary issues by following the media: reading quality newspapers; watching relevant television programmes; listening to the radio; reading fiction and non-fiction. •The ability to discuss social issues and to be aware of different perspectives. •An enquiring mind. What students do after successful completion: •Go on to University to read Sociology or any of the Social Sciences (e.g. Criminology, Theology). •Use Sociology as one of their A-levels to read other subjects at University e.g. Law. •Go into employment - employers value an awareness of social institutions and group behaviour. According to the British Sociological Association Sociology graduates have gone into careers such as: •Teaching, journalism, nursing, social work, finance, accountancy, paramedics, personnel, law, politics, insurance, banking, manufacturing, physiotherapy and management.

Entry requirements

Students should fulfil the general entry requirements to study A levels at the Academy and have the ability to write essays clearly and to think independently. Previous study of Sociology is not necessary, but a good knowledge of current affairs will help. All students are provided with a range of texts over the duration of the course.

Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Sociology, which could lead you onto higher education in one or more of the Social Sciences such as Sociology, Development Studies, Anthropology or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Sociology and people such as a Social Worker, Teacher, Social Researcher or a more general position working within the Social Services. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the health and social care sectors. You could take this course with other advanced level courses to prepare for higher education in one or more of the Social Sciences such as Sociology, Development Studies, Anthropology or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Sociology and people such as a Social Worker, Teacher, Social Researcher or a more general position working within the Social Services.
