Course description

Why study Spanish?
Speaking another language can open up a host of opportunities for young people. Spanish compliments many subjects because of the numerous opportunities that arise to use languages in any chosen career. There are so many options available to you. Here are a few: media, market research, personal assistant, recruiting agency, interpreter, translator, languages teacher, The Foreign Office, travel and tourism industry, engineering, marketing, technology, voluntary and charitable work.

Course content

The specification content covers the two main areas of interest.

Theme 1 (AS) - Being a young person in Spanish-speaking society: Family structures, traditional and modern values, friendships/relationships; Youth trends, issues and personal identity; Educational and employment opportunities

Theme 2 (AS) - Understanding the Spanish-speaking world: Regional culture and heritage in Spain, Spanish-speaking countries and communities; Spain and Latin American countries in a Euroopean context; Literature, art, film and music in the Spanish speaking world.

Assessment

Unit 1: Speaking

  • 48 marks
  • Task 1
        • Arguing a point of vies based on a written stimulus card
    Task 2
        • Discussion based on a second written stimulus card
  • 15 minutes
        • Task 1: 5-6 minutes
        • Task 2: 7-9 minutes

Unit 2: Listening, reading and translation

  • 60 marks
  • Task 1
        • Listening
    Task 2
        • Reading
    Task 3
        • Translation - from Spanish into English/Welsh

Unit 3: Critical response in writing (closed book)

  • 52 marks
  • Two essay questions based on the study of one film from the prescribed list.
