Bricklaying Diploma Level 1 at New College Stamford

Course description

Learn and develop the basic skills, knowledge and understanding of bricklaying and the construction industry. Through undertaking practical tasks you will understand how to construct block walling, brick walling, cavity walling, be able to mix construction materials and set out for basic masonry structures. You will also learn the principles of Health and Safety and gain knowledge of construction technology.You will have the opportunity to visit the Construction Trade Fair at the NEC in Birmingham, as well as other trade based events. You can also take part in regional and national competitions such as World Skills Build which has seen the very best in the Construction industry compete for over 45 years!This course is approximately 10% theory and 90% practical.

Course content

You will learn through a combination of theory and practical based learning including written assesments, group discussions, presentations and practical handlingThe knowledge required to support this is learnt through a combination of practical portfolio, workbooks and work packs using on-line and paper based resources. In order to give you an insight into the real working environment you will be supported to find and undertake a week of work experience.The College is also proactive in undertaking a variety of community projects.All materials used to support you in your studies are made available via the College ‘Moodle’ which can also be used to submit your work.

Entry requirements

4 GCSE grades at D or above.

Assessment

Each unit has a multiple choice end test, as well a practical synoptic test/s in the workshop. You will receive regular feedback on your performance and help and advice via action plans and extra training to enable you to be successful in your assessments.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you can progress on to the Brickwork Diploma Level 2, or a Trowel Occupations Apprenticeship.

Further information

You will require a uniform consisting of steel toe capped boots and overalls which can be purchased from our website. During your interview you will also sit an online suitability assessment. The result of this, plus your previous academic achievements and maturity will determine the level of course you are offered.
