Course description


f you enjoy an active, outdoors lifestyle and are enthusiastic about working with people, this could be the ideal apprenticeship for you. 

The sports activity sector is exciting and diverse, and this programme provides an ideal starting point.

This Apprenticeship is delivered through Ignite Sport and you will get to choose your base: Thame, Reading, Oxford, Banbury or Witney.

You gain a nationally-recognised qualification while developing the basic skills and experience needed to pursue a career in activity leadership in a range of settings. You also obtain a valuable insight into the types of roles open to you in this sector.

Course content

The Sport Intermediate Apprenticeship qualification is made up of several elements:

- NVQ Level 2 in Activity Leadership
- A knowledge-based qualification
- Functional Skills in Maths and English
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this apprenticeship, although you will need to have a passion for sport. 

Upon submitting your application you will be invited in for an interview and initial assessment. This is to ensure that you are at the right level of learning for the course, and that the apprenticeship is right for you.


Your learning consists of practical sessions in the workplace, as well as classroom-based work. Assessment takes place through observations, coursework and exams.

Future opportunities

The activity leadership apprenticeship provides the perfect stepping stone to further study, either at college or university, or a full-time career in activity leadership. 

Possible job roles open to you include activity leader, fitness instructor, and community sports coach.

      • Approach from the city ring Road to the BMW Works roundabout. (Map 2). This roundabout is easy to recognise because it is situated at the heart of the BMW Works area.
      • Turn away from the direction of the city (i.e. right turn if travelling anti-clockwise on the ring road, left turn if travelling clockwise).
      • Proceed along the Garsington Road, Watlington Road, passing through two sets of traffic lights. At the third set opposite Johnson's Home Centre turn right into Cuddesdon Way, the College is a few hundred yards along this road on the left hand side.
