Biology A Level at Nene Park Academy

Course description

Biology involves the study of a wide range of exciting topics ranging from molecular biology to the study of ecosystems. Biology is never far from the headlines: the human genome has been sequenced, the ability to prevent ageing or the development of transplant surgery. Biologists are concerned with a variety of issues and work in the field of cell biology, medicine, food production and ecology and the work they do is vital to us all for our well-being and survival.


Course content

Year 12 Study

Module 1 – Development of practical skills in biology

These practical skills will be assessed in the written exam and practical endorsement.

Module 2 – Foundations in biology

Module 3 – Exchange and transport

Module 4 – Biodiversity, evolution and disease


Year 13 study

Module 5 – Communication, homeostasis and energy

Module 6 – Genetics, evolution and ecosystems




Entry requirements

Standard;  5 GCSE or equivalent subjects at a minimum Grade 4 including Maths and English, with  a grade 6 in GCSE Biology and in Maths or grade 6's in Core and Additional Science with a grade 6 in Maths. 


There will be 3 exam papers

1. Biological processes 37% of grade

2. Biological diversity 37% of grade

3. Unified Biology 26% of grade

Practical skills will be examined in all the papers.
