Production Arts (Technical Theatre) BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 at The Manchester College

Course description

Explore and develop your creative, technical and professional skills to prepare you for a successful future in the work of Technical Theatre. This exciting and highly practical qualification explores a variety of technical theatre roles and responsibilities and gives a solid understanding of the back-stage world of a professional theatre. A mixture of coursework and practical assessment is used, with all written assignments embedded into your practical work. You may be asked to research designers, specific era in history, working practices and methods. You may be asked to write a log or diary of your creative process. The course also will explore a range of opportunities for possible career paths within the Performing Arts industry and equip you for your next step.• Practical technical skills across a wide range of technical aspects. • Preparation for Drama School / University and Professional Interviews.• Exploring the business side of being a freelance and employed technician• Studying a variety of different technical job roles e.g. Lighting, Sound, Set design, Stage Management.

Entry requirements

• You will take part in an interview, to assess your skills and current knowledge• 5 x GCSE Grades A* - C including either English or Maths.• Prior practical experience desirable but not essential

Assessment

All assessments are internal and are made up of both theoretical / written coursework tasks and also demonstrations of your practical skills.

Financial information

Degree level training at either University or Drama SchoolTechnical theatre students can work in a wide variety of fields, Film, Television, music events, Theatre or corporate.

    • Shena Simon Campus is a vibrant sixth form centre in the heart of Manchester. The campus offers a full range of A levels and is well known for its excellent performing arts and music courses. It has industry standard media facilities and two theatres.

      Performances at the Waterside Theatre and Sackville Theatre are open to the public and are advertised on our events page.

      Facilities at Shena Simon Campus include:

      Local area

      Shena Simon Campus is a Grade II listed building in a lively and beautiful part of the city centre. Whitworth Gardens, also known as Sackville Park, is a leafy urban oasis next to the campus. Shena Simon is surrounded by university buildings, giving 16-18 year olds a window into student life. The streets around the campus have lots of interesting architecture in the ornate style of the textile industry.

      Manchester’s central bus station and Piccadilly and Oxford Road train stations are a few minutes’ walk from the campus. The National Express coach station is just around the corner.

      Shena Simon has the benefit of all the city centre’s attractions. It is particularly close to Chinatown and the Cornerhouse gallery and arts cinema.
