Engineering BTEC 90 Credit and Extended Diploma Level 3 at Boston College

Course description

The Level 3 Diploma provides you with an understanding and practical experience of specialist engineering technologies and principles. 

You will build on your knowledge of engineering achieved either through completion of the Level 2 Diploma or through demonstrating at interview you have the capabilities for direct entry. 

You will also have the opportunity to visit a number of engineering and educational establishments to enhance your learning and experience the different careers and environments available in the the engineering industry. 

You may leave the course at the end of the first year with 90 credits, however successful completion of the full 2 year course is equivalent to 3 A-levels and which will therefore attract UCAS points to enable you to apply for a place at university.

Course content

Your studies will include sessions that cover both the theoretical and practical aspects of Engineering including: 

- Health and safety 
- Engineering principles 
- Principles of mechanical manufacturing engineering 

and a range of units that give you an overview of engineering skills. 

You will also continue your studies towards either a Functional Skills or GCSE qualification in English and Maths. You will also develop your skills for employment, looking at different careers and the opportunities available with Engineering employers.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grades C or above (New GCSE grade - 4 or above) including English, Maths and related subjects (or equivalent) or Merit or above at Level 2 in relevant subject. 


You will carry out online tests, practical assessments and written assignments at various stages of the course.

Financial information

You will need to purchase corporate work wear, which includes polo shirts, overalls, fleece, safety footwear and eye protection.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this qualification could lead to university/higher education, local, national or international employment or uniformed services such as the Forces.
