Course content

What you will study

Three mandatory units:- * Working safely in an engineering environment: * Working efficiently and effectively in engineering * Using and communicating technical information Additional units:- * Making components using hand tools and fitting techniques * Using Lathes for turning operations * Fabrication of thick plate * MIG Welding You will also be expected to work towards Functional Skills qualifications in ICT, Maths and English. Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you. Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

Continuous assessment in theory and practice.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residential etc. which are payable by all students.

Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international students.

      Situated less than a mile from Wakefield Westgate Train station and the main College campus, the Waterton Building houses the Performing Arts provision at Wakefield College. With over £1m spent in 2012 on this facility, the Waterton Building offers performance space, dance and drama studios and classrooms, plus industry standard equipment and facilities for our students.

      The pinnacle of the building is the superb new professional 220 seat theatre venue.
