Engineering BTEC Extended Diploma - Level 3 at Redcar & Cleveland College

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering is designed to allow students to learn and apply engineering knowledge to real engineering problems. The course prepares students for a Degree in engineering or to enter industry. This course is split into TWO distinctive years.

YEAR ONE – 90 Credit Diploma

YEAR TWO Top-up to Extended Diploma

Modules covered

The course is divided into four main areas:

  • Theory The theoretical aspects (maths, science, electrical principles, and mechanical principles) provide the students with an understanding of engineering principles, which will be required for work as an engineering technician or to enter a degree level engineering course at University.
  • Practical The practical aspects of the course allow students to gain practical skills and learn how engineering components are made.
  • Design Design allows students to learn and practice design procedures, and translate conceptual ideas into working drawings for manufacture.
  • Project This is a major part of the course in which students will work on an engineering project of their choice.

Course content

The first year standalone 90 Credit Diploma course is equivalent to 1½ A Levels and students are awarded a certificate on the successful completion of the one year course. The course is designed to expose students to a broad range of engineering disciplines allowing them to gain the essential foundation knowledge in engineering for further targeted study and/or a career in multidiscipline industrial environment.

A key component of the Extended Diploma is an Engineering Project which enables students to apply their knowledge and understanding from a range of engineering units to develop and manage a substantial piece of individual work. In doing so it allows students to refine key work skills such as planning, prioritisation, and time management which provides the student with experiential evidence to support subsequent careers and university applications/interviews.

Entry requirements

Five GCSE’s at Grade C or above, including Maths, English and a Science.

Year 2: BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering Technology

Key areas you will be studying:

This 1 year course is an extension/continuation of the 90 Credit Diploma and is comprised of 9 further units, allowing students to increase their knowledge of their chosen discipline in either Mechanical, Electrical or Electronics engineering, with a mix and match option to study a Mechatronics blend of units.

Assessment

Throughout the programme students are continually assessed using a variety of methods such as, assignments, observations, practical assessment, presentations and phase tests.

Financial information

There is no explicit uniform or kit requirements and any PPE equipment required for the practical/workshop activities will be provided by the college.

Future opportunities

On completion of the 90 Credit Diploma course students will have the opportunity to progress onto the Extended Diploma in Engineering, with subsequent progression into higher education or employment as a professional Engineer. Alternatively, on completion of the 90 Credit Diploma course students have the opportunity to progress directly into a career in Engineering.

Previous students have successfully progressed onto a range of careers and further learning such as an OPITO technical apprenticeship offshore, engineering apprenticeship with the NHS and Electronics Degree at York University.
