This subject is popular and helps the student to develop an ability to select information, analyse problems and present a well reasoned argument, skills of great importance in many careers and in adult life. It is also interesting, often dramatic and above all enjoyable.

Course content

CONTENT - Advanced Level

Unit 3: Key themes in Political Analysis. 50% of A2 marks. Students will study Topic C - Representative Processes in the USA. Unit 4: Extended Themes in Political Analysis. 50% of A2 marks. Students will study Topic C - Governing the USA.

Entry requirements

Advanced Level

  • In order to progress onto Advanced Level courses you must achieve at least a D grade at AS Level in three subjects (excluding General Studies)

Assessment

ASSESSMENT

Unit 3 : 1 examination paper - 1 hours - students will be asked to answer three short questions from a choice of five and one essay question from a choice of three. Unit 4: 1 examination paper - 1 hours - students will be asked to answer three short questions from a choice of five and one essay question from a choice of three

WHAT CAN I DO WITH GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS?

Government and Politics is a valuable qualification. The experience of logical analysis, relevant selection and presentation of convincing, well supported argument is appropriate and useful for many careers. The constant and ever changing political scene is important and fascinating, the successful student will have benefited from both intensive supported self study and the acquisition of detailed knowledge/skills. Universities offer a very wide range of degree courses in this subject area. The skills involved in the study of politics are transferable and there are many career opportunities for graduates. Their skills tend to appeal to employers in the following fields: Journalism, Broadcasting, Law, Business, Publishing, Civil Service, Local Government, Retail Management, Teaching. In recent years Government and Politics has been chosen as an Advanced Level subject by students going on to study Medicine.

WHAT DO I NEED TO START THE COURSE?

A television/radio/access to internet. Access to newspapers/journals. An ability to work hard, read widely and write clear, fluent English. An interest in contributing to informed debate in both small groups and whole class discussion. It is important to be willing and able to work hard, to follow advice and to be prepared to think for yourself and to enjoy the opportunities the course provides for extension activities of many types. In recent years our students have participated in Youth in Parliament Days, specialist lectures and a study tour to Brussels.
