A Level Law at Wakefield College

Course description

One of the most popular subjects in Wakefield College Sixth Form, the study of Law will provide you with the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to succeed in Higher Education or Employment.

Our Learning Resource Centre and well-equipped teaching rooms provide the support you need to get the most out of this subject. Our teaching staff have many years' experience of delivering this very specialised subject. You will also have the opportunity to visit local courts as well as participating in a programme of guest lectures, from legal specialists such as working magistrates, solicitors, the police and university law departments.

Course content

What you will study

This course will enable you to develop an understanding of the principles of English Law and the structure of major aspects of the English Legal System. You will investigate how Law is made and the role of judges, juries and the legal profession.

You will learn about aspects of criminal law, for example offences against the person, the law of homicide and the various property crimes. You will also study aspects of civil law including the law of tort, contract and human rights.

Finally, you will study some of the more philosophical elements of the subject such as the relationship between law, morality and justice.

Your Course Structure

This course has now changed to the linear qualification structure. The course will be assessed via 100% examination at the end of the second year of study.

How you will learn

Teaching and learning will be mainly through lectures, supported by small group work, case studies and presentations.  You will be expected to expand classwork with additional reading prior to and after lessons. Essay writing and problem solving exercises will also be used to assess your progress in this subject.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at A*-C (or new grade 9-4), including English Language at grade 5 and Maths at grade 4.
 

Assessment

Your progress will be assessed through completion of regular written work. There will be a mock exam period at the end of the Autumn Term. There is no coursework element for this qualification. A full revision programme will be provided in the second term that will run up until the summer examinations.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

This subject provides a valuable first step for a career in Law. Apart from the professions of Solicitor and Barrister, there is a long list of associated career pathways such as Legal Executive, Paralegal, Police or any role within the Criminal Justice System. A qualification in Law is also useful for various careers in the world of Business.
