Vehicle Maintenance and Repair - Light Vehicle IMIAL Level 2 Extended Diploma at Exeter College

Course description

The IMIAL Level 2 Extended Diploma is designed to build on the Level 2 Subsidiary Diploma to provide a complete set of skills for work in the light vehicle automotive industry. It can also help to fast-track students into an Advanced Apprenticeship. An ability to work independently is an essential part of this course.

Course content

The IMIAL Level 2 Extended Diploma is delivered through a number of units covering:   

  • Automotive support for job roles
  • Automotive Science
  • Automotive Mathematics
  • Automotive ICT
  • Automotive Electrical and Electronics
  • Light vehicle engines systems
  • Light vehicle transmission systems
  • Light vehicle electrical systems
  • Light vehicle chassis systems

Entry requirements

To begin the IMIAL Level 2 Extended Diploma you will have completed the Subsidiary Diploma and have a minimum of four good GCSEs at Grade C or above in Mathematics, English and Science based subjects.


Assessment of each unit is made up of three components – IMI Practical Assessments, Centre Devised Assessment Methods and IMI External Testing.

Financial information

You will be required to have boots, overalls and Polo shirts which are ordered through our supplier. You will also have to pay £50 to cover faculty materials.

Future opportunities

The Extended Diploma will help you find a job within the automotive industry. The Level 2 programme gives an excellent opportunity to progress onto an apprenticeship or to the Level 3 Diploma.
