English Language A level at Burnside Business and Enterprise College

Course description

The English Department consists of 12 specialists, including a Literacy Coordinator and one teaching assistant to support  intervention strategies. There are 10 classrooms all equipped with an Interactive Whiteboard. We have a suite of 10 computers available for pupils to use.

As an enthusiastic, motivated and well led team we keep at the heart of our curriculum a love of reading and raising literacy standards.  Learning is personalised for the individual needs of each pupil and appropriate intervention to support  improvements in reading and writing are implemented as necessary. This will include small group support focusing on a reading or writing skill or inclusion in our successful Reading Intervention Programme.

Within English, pupil progress and outcomes are regularly tracked and monitored to ensure that pupils make the required progress and attainment across key stages. Pupils receive regular feedback on their work and targets for improvement.

A variety of active Teaching and Learning strategies are used in lessons such as group work, discussion activities and the use of drama activities, ensuring that English is fun and engaging for all.

Entry requirements

The general entry requirement is 5 A* - C full GCSE/BTEC courses, including English Language and Mathematics at grade C or higher.  

BTEC qualifications will only count as 1 GCSE. If more than 1 BTEC (level 2) is studied, only the best will count towards the overall points score.  GCSE short courses will not be counted.
