Business - Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate at The Mirfield Free Grammar and Sixth Form
This work-related qualification is of interest to those who want to study Business in the context of commercial enterprises. The course aims to develop students' initiative, independence, and approach to business solutions, as well as problem solving and communication skills. Students will study topics such as business ownership, marketing, business finance and human resources. Each topic is linked to an actual business, giving a real insight into the ever changing business world. Through practical projects such as developing a tailored marketing campaign, students will be challenged to develop practical and industry standard skills, e.g. project management, resource and budget planning, presentation preparation and delivery and how to identify and meet customers' needs.
This course provides students with entrepreneurial skills and knowledge which enables them to study business at a higher level, to establish their own business in the market or to develop practical skills which can be used to access a variety of employment or further education opportunities in the future.
Unit 1 – Exploring Business (Internally Assessed Coursework)
Unit 2 – Developing a marketing campaign (Exam Externally Assessed)
Unit 3 – Personal and Business Finance (Exam Externally Assessed)
Unit 8 – Recruitment and Selection (Internally Assessed)
General Entry Requirements:Minimum of 5 GCSEs 9-4 or A*-C including English Language and Mathematics

This scheme was introduced by the Government to help students study. Contributions and payments ‘in kind’ have been made to students to help with their individual identified needs, such as:
• Stationery costs and packs
• Books and revision guides
• Educational trips/residential trips
• University Open Day visit costs
• Employment/apprenticeship opportunities
Bursaries are available to students in the following categories:
Students who are identified by the government at ‘most vulnerable’ will be eligible for a guaranteed bursary of £1,200.
Family income is below threshold for working tax credits/free school meals.
Students who have an extreme financial barrier, mitigating circumstances and/or a short-term specific educational or independent living cost.
Applications will be issued during Summer 2018 for students to return on Enrolment Day.

The course provides an excellent foundation for pursuing further studies in the various areas of business, such as management, business law, business administration and retail. Students who have passed this qualification have gone on to study business studies at university and its related courses, such as events management, accountancy, law and operations management.
If you have an inquisitive mind for the business world and enjoy the practical side of learning, then this is the course for you. You need to be motivated to meet deadlines and flexible in your approach to the course, due to the nature of assessment.
