Room 97 Creative STARS is the perfect platform to launch your career in the creative world of hairdressing. This is a brand new hairdressing programme at Wakefield College delivered in partnership with Room 97 Creative, one of just a few L’Oreal Portfolio Salons in the UK. The course brings a unique high level of hairdressing to develop excellence in newcomers to the sector as they embark on their journey into a professional career. Wakefield College and Room 97 Creative Academy partnership combines the very best of excellence in education fused with the award-winning experience of the salon and their team of master educators.

Course content

What you will study

You will develop advanced technical skills as well as understand the impact and importance of all key aspects of the hairdressing industry and what it takes to pursue a professional career. You will be given to opportunities to learn from the best, to excel and become the very best you can.

You will learn all practical hairdressing and customer service skills at Room 97 Creative Academy where practical sessions will be based. You will work on real clients and fast track your skills to become highly employable in the hairdressing sector.

How you will learn

You will practice your hairdressing skills with the award-winning Room 97 Creative education team, in a business environment, frequented by a wide range of clients.

All underpinning knowledge, theory, employability skills, English and Maths will be delivered in classrooms at City Campus.

Entry requirements

You will need to evidence 4 GCSE's at grades A* to D (or new grades 9-3), including English and Maths

OR Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing plus Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths.

In addition, you will be interviewed by the Room97 Creative Academy Director and Course Tutor as well as the College’s course leader. You will need to demonstrate that you are committed, reliable and willing to develop exceptional professional skills to join the prestigious team at Room 97 Creative. You will need to demonstrate excellent attendance at your previous institution.



Course structure

Classroom based: 30% of the qualification will be classroom based (theory, employability skills, English and Maths). All theory lessons will be based at Wakefield College, City Campus, in the heart of Wakefield.


Practical work: 70% of this qualification is made up of practical work. All practical work will be based at Room 97 Creative Academy & Salon, based in Wakefield’s prime shopping area, Trinity Walk.


Work placement: Your work experience will comprise placement at one of the Room 97 Creative salons as well as experience at their partner salons too, so you will not have to worry about sourcing your own placement.

Financial information

Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, and residentials, which are payable by all students.

Any student registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and subsequently withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any re-sit examination will incur a cost.

Different fees apply to international/overseas students and those studying this qualification as a standalone course.

Future opportunities

Career Opportunities

This course qualifies you to work as a skills hairdresser in salons, on cruise ships, health farms, mobile hairdressing business, etc.

Further study

Students who successful achieve the level 2 Diploma in Ladies Hairdressing can progress onto the 16 to 18 level 3 study programme in Hairdressing Studies. This can also lead to progress onto Level 4 Salon Management the following year.
