Pre GCSE Science and ESOL at West Thames College

Course description

This course is designed to prepare you for study at GCSE level. You will study English (ESOL), study skills, and maths, chemistry, physics and biology from the GCSE syllabus. The course includes visits to local places of interest.

Course content

You will study:

  • ESOL
  • Maths
  • Study skills
  • Citizenship.

You will also take pre-GCSE Science. 

You will have weekly tutorials and receive advice on careers and work. One of the main features of the programme is an emphasis on pastoral support and looking after the individual needs of students, and we have a welfare officer to give you advice on issues such as housing, benefits, and finding a doctor or solicitor.

The course includes visits to local places of interest and you will receive advice on careers and further courses.

Entry requirements

You should have a pass at ESOL Entry 3 or equivalent. You will have an assessment and an interview.

You will work towards a Level 1 qualification in ESOL and Maths by building a portfolio of work throughout the year and taking Skills for Life exams in ESOL and Functional Skills Maths exams. Students with a strong background in mathematics may be entered for GCSE Maths.

Financial information

This course is free for eligible students aged 16-18.
