Sport - BTEC Level 2 Diploma at West Thames College
This is a practical work-related course combined with projects and assignments. You will learn about anatomy and physiology, practical sport and development of personal fitness. You will complete projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations. Additional units may include health and fitness and IT for sport. The course is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at A*-C and provides a good basis for further qualifications.
If you are doing an Apprenticeship in Sport, this qualification will form the Technical Certificate component of the framework.
You will study:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Fitness for sport
- Psychology for sport
- Practical sport.
You will also study functional skills in English and maths. You will be expected to wear a college sport kit.
You will have opportunities to gain qualifications in first aid, lifeguarding, and coaching.
At least 2 GCSEs at grade D / grade 3 or above, or successful completion of the Foundation Level Diploma with functional skills in English and maths.

Two units are externally assessed via a multi-choice exam. Other units will be assessed by a series of assignments, with both practical and theory elements. Each assignment is graded pass, merit or distinction and the grades will contribute towards your overall result. Functional skills will be assessed via an external exam.
This course is free for students aged 16-18. However you will pay for a sports kit, textbook and local visits. Assistance may be available to help with these costs. Fees may be subject to change.
When you complete the course you could look at work in the sport and leisure industry, such as a gym assistant or sports coach. If your grades are at a suitable level you can progress to the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport.
