Business - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at West Thames College

Course description

West Thames College's Business and Administration courses have good success rates. Our teachers have industry experience and will help you progress to university and employment.

You'll study work-related projects linked to current business practice, e.g. working with live briefs from real clients. Business courses offer outstanding work experience opportunities, plus UK and overseas field trips and industry visits.

BTEC Level 3 is a vocational qualification that will help you to develop practical knowledge, understanding and skills required to work in the business sector. The course is designed for students who aim to progress to the second year and gain a BTEC Extended Diploma in Business, higher education and ultimately employment in the business sector. Students progressing onto the second year Extended Diploma will attain a qualification equivalent to three A Levels.

Course content

This qualification provides the knowledge, understanding and employable skills that allow learners to gain business sector experience that will prepare them for further study or training. The learning programme covers the following content areas or units:

  • The Business Environment
  • Accounting Systems
  • Business Resources
  • Managing a Business Event
  • Recruitment and Selection in Business
  • Introduction to Marketing
  • Developing Teams in Business
  • Business Communication
  • Computer Applications for Financial Management

Learners must complete and achieve all these units to be eligible for progression to the Extended Diploma in Business (Year 2).

You will have a 2-week work experience placement, go on study trips and visits to business and commercial centres, and take part in enterprise challenges.


Entry requirements

4 or more GCSEs at grades A*-C / grades 9-4 (including Maths and English Language), or BTEC Level 2 at merit or above with Functional Skills in English and Maths.

Unit 2 Exploring Business and Unit 3 Personal and Business Finance are externally assessed through examination and set tasks. The remaining four units are internally assessed through course work.

This course is free for students aged 16-18.

Future opportunities

Students could progress to the second year Extended Diploma in Business, higher education in business, marketing, accounting, finance or ultimately to employment in the business sector.
