Extended Project Qualification at Northampton Academy

Course description

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a Level 3 qualification based around skills that universities and employers have said they value most. It has the equivalence of studying an extra AS and is recognized by all top universities and UCAS. The course requires students to be extremely independent and show excellent time management skills.

Course content

100% coursework assessed.

Students will produce either a 5000-word essay or a physical artefact on a subject of their choice. Both types of project should be backup up by a research diary, Candidate Record Form (CRF), and presentations to a group. Students are marked on 4 main subject areas: managing the project, use of resources, develop and realise ideas, evaluation of project. Students will need to find and work with a member of staff as their supervisor who will guide them through the project giving some guidance in how to develop a title among other areas.

Entry requirements

At least 5 A*-C GCSE’s including minimum Grade 5 in English Literature or Language.


100% coursework – the production of an essay or artefact on an individual research question.

Future opportunities

The study of EPQ will allow students to access any career as the research would normally be based on the further education or career choices that the student has. It is highly looked upon by many universities with amended entries sometimes being offered as a result of a student studying the EPQ
