Music Technology A Level at Northampton Academy

Course description

This course has recently become more open to all styles of popular music. You will develop as an all-round musician in a practical and applied way.

Course content

Component 1: Recording – 20% of qualification. Production tools and techniques to capture, edit, process and mix an audio recording.

Component 2: Technology-based composition. – 20% of qualification. Creating, editing, manipulating and structuring sounds to produce a technology based composition.

Component 3: Listening – 25% of qualification. Written examination (1 hour 30 mins).

Entry requirements

At least 5 A*-C GCSEs including a Grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics. It is desirable to be at least a Grade 5 standard on an instrument/voice. You must have a genuine interest in all types of music and a willingness to spend extra time rehearsing, practicing and contributing to the musical enrichment life of the school as well as completing private study.

Assessment

1. Recording and production techniques for both corrective and creative purposes. Includes components: Recording, Technology-based composition, Listening and analysing and Producing and analysing.

2. Principles of sound and audio technology. Includes components: Listening and analysing and Producing and analysing.

3. The development of recording and production technology. Includes components: Listening and analysing

Future opportunities

Music demonstrates that you have excellent performing skills and a good level of self-confidence in your own abilities. The performance aspect of the course demonstrates that you have committed to something over a long period of time which is a highly desirable quality to any future employer or educational institution.
