Business BTEC Level 3 Diploma at John Taylor High School Academy

Course description

Students will need to complete a number of units to gain either the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Business (equivalent to 2 A levels) or the BTEC National Extended Diploma in Business (equivalent to 3 A levels). Assessment is done through a mix of written coursework, controlled assessment and external exams.

Course content

Mandatory Units Covered

Unit 1: Exploring Business (coursework) (Year 12) – students will study the features of different businesses, explore what makes businesses successful, investigate how two businesses are organised and investigate the environment and the markets in which businesses operate. They will then investigate the role of innovation and enterprise to business.

Unit 2: Developing a Marketing Campaign (controlled assessment) (Year 12) – students will be provided with a case study two weeks prior to a supervised assessment period in order to carry out the research in three hours. Students will carry out a task that requires them to prepare a rationale and then plans a marketing campaign for a given product or service.

Unit 3: Personal and Business Finance (Written exam) (Year 12) –Students will learn the importance of personal and business financial documents, financial planning tools such as cash flow forecasts and break-even and will learn to prepare and analyse statements of comprehensive income and statements of financial position.

Unit 4: Managing an Event (Coursework) (Year 13) – students will investigate successful events and use this research to run an event themselves. They will need to work in a team to plan, stage and evaluate the success of the event.

Unit 5: International Business (Coursework) (Year 13) – students will explore the benefits and issues associated with international business. They will need to investigate the economic and cultural factors that influence businesses in an international context.

Unit 6: Principles of Management (controlled assessment) (Year 13) – students will get a pre-released case study and students will need to complete the given task. Students will prepare by examining how businesses adapt their approaches to management in response to challenges in their environment.

Optional Units - will be decided based on staff expertise but are likely to include the following: Unit 8 Recruitment and Selection Process, Unit 27 Work Experience in Business.

BTEC National Extended Diploma in Business (7 mandatory units plus 6 optional units)
Students will cover all the same mandatory units as for the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Business plus one other mandatory unit:

Unit 7: Business Decision Making (controlled assessment) (Year 13) – students will need to learn about different business situations/scenarios where they will be required to select and use appropriate evidence from several sources and support their arguments. They will need to consider probable consequences, identify faulty arguments or misrepresentations of information or data and evaluate and justify their proposals. Students will need to submit a task based on a case study under supervised conditions.

Optional Units are likely to include – Unit 8 Recruitment and Selection Process, Unit 19 Pitching for a new Business, Unit 21 Training and Development, Unit 22 Market Research.


Entry requirements

Grade 4 GCSE English, Maths and other supporting subjects. Students studying BTEC First Business should have achieved Merit and those studying GCSE Business Communication systems grade C.
