Food Science and Nutrition A Level at St Edward's Roman Catholic/Church of England School

Course description

It allows students to gain a wealth of knowledge about the food and nutrition industry.  Students will have the opportunity to learn about the relationship between the human body and food as well as practical skills for cooking and preparing food. Students will be able to consider employment in a range of different industries including the food and drink sectors of hospitality, catering, food production and retail as well as entry to higher level courses.

Course content

The 2-year qualification has been designed around the concept of a 'plan, do review' approach to learning.  There is a strong emphasis on practical work, making this an ideal choice for students who prefer to learn by doing. The qualifications mirror many work activities in the food and nutrition industry and facilitate learning in a wide range of contexts. Students are able to apply and extend their learning outside the confines of the classroom.  Assessment is through a variety of external and internal assessment.  A combination of a written exam and external assignment set and marked by WJEC and two centres marked assignments.

Entry requirements

Grade C in the following GCSE subjects: Food Technology, Food and Nutrition, Food Preparation and Nutrition or Catering and Hospitality.

Future opportunities

Students will be able to consider employment in a range of different industries including the food and drink sectors of hospitality, catering, food production and retail as well as entry to higher level courses.
