Business Studies BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at Great Wyrley Performing Arts High School

Course description

Over the two-year course, pupils are assessed via units of work. There are 4 in total and pupils will complete 2 in year 1 and 2 in year 2. Pupils must complete all 4 units if they are to achieve a qualification. In the first year, pupils will complete the first of two mandatory units which are assessed via an externally assessed piece of course work and an external examination. This is the same for year 2. Details of the units and their topic content are detailed below.

Course content

YEAR 1 Unit 1 – Exploring Business (internally assessed course work)
In this unit, you will study
- Organisational structures
- Pricing and output situations
- Situational analysis tools
- Supply and demand
- Inflation & exchange rates

YEAR 1 Unit 2 – Developing a marketing campaign (Externally assessed exam)
In this unit, you will study
- The elements of the marketing mix
- Promotional mix
- Market research and its validity and bias
- Effective pricing strategies

YEAR 2 Unit 3 – Personal and Business Finance (Externally assessed exam)
In this unit you will study
- Break even analysis
- Cash flow forecasting
- Trading, profit and loss
- Balance sheets

YEAR 2 Unit 8 – Recruitment & Selection (internally assessed coursework)
In this unit, you will study
- The recruitment and selection process
- Selection techniques
- Legal & ethical issues in recruitment
- Interview types and techniques

Future opportunities

The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Business is an Applied General qualification. It is for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education and ultimately to employment in the business sector. The qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level and aims to provide a coherent introduction to study of the business sector and will ensure entry onto a variety of business studies related degrees.
