ICT BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at St Edmund Campion Catholic School

Course description

The New BTEC National in Information Technology has been specially developed for the IT sector to give education and training. It will enable you to enter employment in the IT sector or to progress to higher vocational qualifications. It gives the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for success in the IT industry.

Course content

Year 12:

Unit 2: Creating Systems to Manage Information (internal task)

This unit is assessed through a ten-hour computer-based practical exam. You will be required to use your database knowledge and practical database skills to solve a real-world problem from the exam board set assignment.

Unit 3: Using Social Media in Business (internal assignments)

In this unit, you will explore different social media websites, the ways in which they can be used and the potential pitfalls when using them for business purposes. A plan will be developed to use social media strategies for business purposes to achieve specific aims and objectives. You will then implement the plan, developing and posting content and interacting with others. Finally, data will need to be collected on the business use of social media and review the effectiveness of your efforts.

Year 13:

Unit 1: Information Technology Systems (external exam)

This unit explores the relationships between the hardware and software that form an IT system, the way systems work individually and together as well as the relationship between the user and the system.

This includes examining issues related to the use of IT systems and the impact that these have on organisations and individuals. In this unit, you will draw on your learning from across your programme to complete assessment tasks.

Unit 4: Optional Unit

In total, this qualification has 58% external assessment and 42% internal assessment. External assessment includes tasks set and marked by Pearson and written exam(s) set and marked by Pearson. Internal assessment includes assignments set and marked internally.
