Course description

In today's society, information and IT are global and influence all forms of human activity. More than ever organisations rely on IT to be more productive and the number of well paid IT jobs continues to grow. Careers in IT provide leadership challenges and opportunities, contributing to a satisfying career that lets you combine IT with your other interests.

This Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A level. It has been designed with refreshing and exciting content, that is up to date, engaging, fit for purpose, and suitable for the needs of modern IT students. OCR consulted with universities, employers and Industry specialists to make sure that students will gain the right combination of knowledge, understanding and skills required for the 21st century.

Students will also develop professional, personal and social skills through interaction with peers, stakeholders and clients, as well as theoretical knowledge and understanding to underpin these skills. These support the transferable skills required by universities and employers such as communication, problem-solving, time management, research and analytical skills.

Course content

Unit 1 - Fundamentals of IT
This unit provides a solid foundation in the fundamentals of hardware, networks, software, the ethical use of computers and how business uses IT.

Unit 2 - Global Information
This unit provides a greater understanding of how organisations use information sources both internally and externally and the types of information encountered.

Unit 3 - Cyber Security
This unit has been designed to enable you to gain knowledge and understanding of the range of threats, vulnerabilities and risks that impact on both individuals and organisations.

Unit 8 - Project Management
This unit will provide you with the opportunity to understand and use various project planning skills and techniques, thereby enabling you to become more effective in the workplace.

Unit 17 - Internet of Everything
This unit is about the use of the internet and how it is impacting people and society.

8 GCSE Grades A*- C or point equivalent

Assessment

Unit 1 - Fundamentals of IT (Mandatory unit)
External - Examination (90 guided learning hours)

Unit 2 - Global Information (Mandatory unit)
External - Examination (90 guided learning hours)

Unit 3 - Cyber Security (Mandatory unit)
External - Examination (60 guided learning hours)

Unit 8 - Cyber Security (Optional unit)
Internal - Coursework (60 guided learning hours)

Unit 17 - Internet of Everything (Optional unit)
Internal - Coursework (60 guided learning hours)

Future opportunities

This course is designed for learners who want to continue their education through applied learning by developing their knowledge and understanding of the principles of IT and global information systems.

Achievement of this qualification can support progression to go on and study IT degrees in a Higher Education institution such as; Computing and IT, Computer Science, Software Developments, Software Engineering, ICT and Computer Networks or Business Information Systems.
