Travel and Tourism BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at Amersham School

Course description

The travel and tourism industry in the UK is growing and is of major importance to the economy. Students will develop the skills needed to examine, interpret and analyse a variety of statistics that measure the importance of tourism to the UK. This includes:

- Different types of destinations and their importance – students will investigate the features and appeal of global destinations.
- Customer service – students will explore and apply ways of managing internal and external customer experience to support organisational success and develop their customer service skills.
- Enterprise and entrepreneurship – students will identify a gap in the market for a new travel and tourism enterprise. They develop a plan and marketing strategy and organise a pitch of the new idea to generate interest.

Course content

Unit 1 – The World of Travel and Tourism

This unit provides the foundation for students to study other units in Travel and Tourism. They will explore all aspects of the industry, its key components and its scale.

Unit 2 – Global Destinations

Students investigate the features and appeal of global destinations. They prepare travel itineraries and recommend suitable destinations for customers.

Unit 3 – Managing the Customer Experience

Students explore and apply ways of managing internal and external customer experience to support organisational success and develop their customer service skills.

Unit 15 – Visitor Attractions

Students investigate the nature and role of both built and natural visitor attractions, their appeal, popularity, response to diverse visitor needs and the importance of delivering a memorable visitor experience.

Entry requirements

8 GCSE Grades A*- C or point equivalent

Assessment

Unit 1 – The World of Travel and Tourism
External – 1.5 hour Examination (90 credits)

Unit 2 - Global Destinations
External - Controlled Assessment (120 credits)

Unit 3 - Managing the Customer Experience
Internal - Assignments (90 credits) - Internally and externally verified

Unit 15 - Visitor Attractions
Internal - Assignments - internally and externally verified (60 credits)
