Physical Education A Level at Ashington Community High School

Course description

This course is for students who have a passion for the sport. Students must be interested in the variety of areas that impact on the development of sports and the psychological and physiological factors that affect a sports performer.

The course is split into three theoretical areas:
- Physiological Factors Affecting Performance
- Psychological Factors Affecting Performance
- Socio-Cultural Issues in Physical Activity and Sport

In addition to the theory lessons, there is a strong emphasis on physical performance. Students will be assessed in one sport (they can opt to be assessed as a performer or coach). Students will also be assessed in their ability to observe and analyse performances through observation. Students will provide an oral response analysing and critically evaluating their peers’ performance.

Course content

Three written papers:

- Paper 1: Physiological Factors Affecting Performance (2 hours, 30%)
- Paper 2: Psychological Factors that Affect Performance (1 hour, 20%)
- Paper 3: Socio-Cultural Issues in Physical Activity and Sport (1 hour, 20%)
- Non Examined Assessment: Performance in Physical Education (30%)

Entry requirements

Students who do well in this subject have typically achieved Grades A* – B at GCSE in PE. It will also be important that students achieved a minimum of a B in the GCSE PE written papers to prove they are capable of approaching the theory content of the AS/A2 syllabus.

Students will need to be a competent performer in one sport. It is expected that they will be competing regularly in this, preferably at least at club level as formal practical lessons will not be timetabled.

Students are expected to work independently and complete all homework tasks set by staff.

The important skills required for students to be successful in this course are a passion for sport, drive, independence and the ability to work with staff to achieve their potential.

Assessment

Theory lessons will be interactive and varied, incorporating practical lessons where applicable to explain the theoretical content. A compulsory after school session will take place to provide support in developing students’ performance/ coaching activity and their Evaluation and Analysis of Performance for Improvement (EAPI) Independent learning and research outside of timetabled lessons is vital.

A Level PE is recognised by universities for those interested in studying in Higher Education within the field of PE and Sport. This A Level is highly suited to students who wish to study courses in:

- Science-related courses
