Design and Technology (Graphic Products) A Level at Stratton Upper School
AIMS OF THE COURSE
- Be able to: apply knowledge, understanding and skills to design products, with a specialism in Graphics.
- Design and make high-quality products that are fit for purpose, satisfy wants and needs, and enhance our day-to-day lives.
Students with good GCSE grades who have not studied D&T in Years 10 & 11 can still take these courses at A Level.
Unit 1: Portfolio of Creative Skills
You will produce one portfolio with three distinct sections which will demonstrate your creativity and flair when investigating, designing and making product(s). This unit has been designed to be as flexible as possible, offering you a wide range of approaches in producing a portfolio of creative skills.
Unit 2: Design and Technology in Practice
You will develop knowledge and understanding of a wide range of materials and processes used in the field of design and technology.
It is important for you, as a designer, to learn about materials and processes so that you can develop a greater understanding of how products can be designed and manufactured. You will also learn about industrial and commercial practices, and the importance of quality checks and the health and safety issues that have to be considered.
Unit 3: Designing for the Future
You will develop your knowledge and understanding of modern design and manufacturing practices and design issues. You must have a good working knowledge of the use of ICT and systems and control technology in the design and manufacture of products, and be aware of the important contributions of designers from the past which may provide inspiration for future design.
Students develop an awareness of the impact of design and technological activities on the environment. Sustainable product design is a key feature of modern design practices.
Unit 4: Commercial Design
In this unit you are given the opportunity to apply the skills you have acquired and developed throughout this course of study, to design and make a product of your choice that complies with the requirements of the graphic products specification.
In order to reach high attainment levels, you must adopt a commercial design approach to your work, reflecting on how a professional designer might deal with a design problem and its resolution.
The design problem should have a real commercial use, in that it should be useful to a wide range of users beyond an individual unless it has been specifically commissioned as a ‘one-off’. The design problem should provide opportunities for a client or user-group to have input into decision making at various stages of the design and make process.
Units 1 and 4 are internally set and marked by the centre and moderated by Edexcel.
Unit 2 is a 90-minute examination set and marked by Edexcel.
Unit 3 is a 120 minute examination set and marked by Edexcel.
Whilst the syllabus is not seen primarily as vocational, the knowledge, understanding and skills gained in a course based on this syllabus is likely to be of great benefit to candidates pursuing further studies – in product design or a specialist or related area such as Industrial design, Automotive design, Model making, Ergonomics, Product design management and innovation, Product design engineering, Manufacturing, Product design technology, Furniture design, or Cabinet making.
