Financial Studies - Level 3 at Stratton Upper School

Course description

This course teaches financial knowledge that no adult can live without and has been designed to provide a challenging qualification covering the core disciplines of financial capability. You are encouraged to become responsible borrowers, sensible savers, and have an appreciation of the need for financial planning throughout your life. You will develop the core skills of critical analysis and evaluation, synthesis, verbal communication (through classroom discussion) and written communication.

You will develop the knowledge and skills required to make informed financial decisions by introducing you to the risks and challenges involved in personal finance and the tools for effective planning. This is learning for life.

Course content

You will develop the confidence to make informed and confident decisions regarding personal finances and appreciate the benefits derived from financial services products to become responsible borrowers, sensible savers, and have an appreciation of the need for financial planning. You will also compare and contrast a range of financial solutions & draw reasoned, informed and sound financial judgements in particular contexts.



Unit 1 – Financial Capability for the Immediate and Short Term

Unit 2 – Financial Capability for the Medium and Long Term


Unit 3 – Sustainability of an Individual’s Finances

Unit 4 – Sustainability of the Financial Services System


Four multiple choice and written exams per year. Each with one retake opportunity.

Future opportunities

Further education opportunities include courses in Financial Studies or Accounting Degrees. Relevant careers include accounting, business and banking.
