BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Sport at Muzzy Izzet and Steve Walsh's Advanced Football Development Academy

Course description

BTEC Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Sport

Do you want to work with former Premier League Footballers Muzzy Izzet and Steve Walsh? Launched in 2014 the Advanced Football Development Academy offers learners the opportunity to develop their football skills under the guidance of former Leicester City players.

Our 1-year academic programme will allow you to play competitive football in the English Colleges Football League each week, as well as receive daily football training from Muzzy Izzet and Steve Walsh. We also have a specialist LCFC goal keeper coach available to accommodate our ever-growing cohort of goal keepers.

We currently have over 60 students on roll, with 3 men’s teams and 1 female team. Our female team won the English Colleges League last season.

Wrapped around the football development programme is a reputable education programme with an excellent support structure to help you achieve a BTEC level 2 first certificate in sport qualification, which would prepare you for our BTEC Level 3 Sports Diploma, an AFDA Level 3 Apprenticeship or Employment.

2017 saw 36% of our students graduate our BTEC Level 3 Diploma with a triple distinction star profile (equivalent of 3 A*’s at A-Level), all of who progressed onto University degrees around the country. Remaining students achieved no less than a triple Merit profile. Other students entered into the armed forces, overseas football scholarships, our AFDA sports coaching apprenticeship or employment. At AFDA we boast a 100% pass rate.

Our highly qualified sports lecturers will deliver a minimum of 12 hours BTEC Sports content per week and cover units such as Fitness for Sport and Exercise, Anatomy and Physiology and Practical Sports Performance.

All AFDA students will receive a David Lloyd Gym membership to use in their own time to further enhance their fitness levels.

All education will take place in our well-equipped, modern, full-size classrooms, which can accommodate up to 30 students in each. Both equipped with individual student laptops, interactive white boards and essential teaching and learning resources.

Students will also have access to our onsite study centre for quiet study/assignment catch up.

What we do not do at our academy is the promise of our students obtaining professional club trials or a pathway into pro clubs. Muzzy and Steve will however work with you intensively over the period of the two years and any who show the ability, attitude and work ethic during this time to progress onto a pro club then they will certainly send you down this pathway using their extensive contacts in professional football cubs.

Course content

The BTEC Level 2 is a one year academic programme which gives learners the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of a vocational sector. The units assess knowledge, understanding and skills which are essential to the curriculum area or vocational industry and support progression onto the BTEC Level 3 Sports course or an NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 Apprenticeship.

Units covered within the BTEC Level 2 Course include:

  • Fitness for Sport and Exercise
  • Practical Sports Performance
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • As well as a variety of optional specialist units.

Entry requirements

Entry on to the BTEC Level 2 Course requires 4 3-9 GCSE grades (GCSE Maths and English retakes are available on our course.) We also like to accept students on to our course who have good attendance, are disciplined and well-mannered and with a passion for football. Those who fall slightly short of 4 3-9 GCSE's will be re-interviewed and decisions will be made on individual merit.

You do not have to be an outstanding footballer to join our course, there is a place for everyone in our tiered squad system. Our education package is the most important component. Students can apply and opt purely for education if they do so wish.

Future opportunities

The academy has a strong association with LCFC Youth Academy, of whom we've played on numerous occasions, with this in mind ongoing scouting opportunities are available for outstanding players at LCFC and other pro clubs.

On completion of the BTEC Level 2, learners have the opportunity to progress on to AFDA's BTEC Level 3, as well as the opportunity to move on to the academy's Level 3 coaching apprenticeship.

Muzzy Izzet and Steve Walsh have strong links with many organisations, clubs and individuals in the sports industry who would recommend any exceptional learners for work. There is also the opportunity to work for Muzzy Izzet and Steve Walsh's Future Foxes Foundation and at AFDA as an assistant coach.

We have American Scholarship Companies come in and deliver presentations to our learners to give them an insight into the benefits of completing a football scholarship abroad. Two of our 2017 female graduates are now studying a fully paid scholarship at El Dorado University, Kansas. Students can only move onto a scholarship if they have completed their BTEC Level 3.
