Law A Level at Ossett Academy and Sixth Form College

Course description

In the first year, students will learn about how the law works and how the law is made within England. Students will gain an understanding of the court systems, legal personnel and how to access justice through legal funding. Alongside that students will look at liability within the Criminal law and the rules of Tort. Criminal law includes criminal liability through a study of offences against the person, such as murder and manslaughter and offences against property such as theft and burglary. Within lawmaking and tort, students will cover how laws are made and interpreted including the influence of EU law and look at liability in negligence, occupier’s liability and remedies that are available to victims.

In the second year, students will cover the nature of law which looks at how the law interacts with morality, justice, society and technology. Students will need to consider the changing nature of law. As the option unit students will cover human rights, including their nature, protection and constitutional position under UK law. Students will develop knowledge and understanding of all the topic areas they cover and be able to apply their legal knowledge to scenario-based situations.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE at grade 5 or above. Students must have achieved grade 5 or above in Maths and English.

Assessment

At the end of the 2 years, students will sit 3 papers: each lasts 2 hours and consists of both short answers, essays and scenario-based questions. Exams are equally weighted at 100 marks per paper.

Future opportunities

The course aims to give students an overview of how the law works and inspire, nurture and develop them as learners. The skills and knowledge developed during this course provides excellent life skills as well as provide valuable analytical skills which can be applied to any degree course.

    • A Warm and Welcoming Environment                              

      At Ossett we realise how important your learning environment is and how the facilities that we provide can help successfully support you in your studies.  Through Student Voice we have worked together to create a warm and welcoming Sixth Form Centre, which houses purpose-built classrooms and an Independent Learning Centre, where students also benefit from state-of-the-art ICT facilities, free Wi-Fi access.  We have also recently added a second Sixth Form study facility which provides additional space and ICT access for independent study.  The Lounge café and Post 16 Common Room provides a great place to eat, and comes complete with 2 large TV screens, network points and student lockers.  It’s the ideal place to meet with friends and take a break from your studies.

      The Independent Learning Centre and Post 16 iBase

      Housed within the Sixth Form Centre you will find the Independent Learning Centre, or ILC, which is heavily used throughout the day by all our Sixth Form students. Here you will find a range of paper-based and electronic resources which have been specifically selected by subject staff to help support you in your independent study. If you need help with subject specific references, producing a presentation or simply in need of a photocopy then our full-time Post-16 Learning Mentor is on hand throughout the day to ensure that you are fully supported in your access to important information. Whether you need time for quiet private study or maybe some group work, the ILC provides private study booths and communal areas to allow students to work in different ways. The ILC also provides fantastic ICT facilities, with a full ICT suite, free Wi-Fi access and netbook loan. All students have access to a dedicated careers' advisor who is available to help students make decisions about their future progression.  The facilities on offer in the ILC have recently been extended to iBase which is used exclusively by Post 16 students and offers study support for all students throughout the college day.
