English Language A Level at Ossett Academy and Sixth Form College

Course description

Have you ever thought about how we use language on a daily basis and how language varies from person to person and place to place? If so, this course will give you a fascinating insight into the language we tend to take for granted; it is an exciting and thought-provoking course that will allow you to discover more about language use in the world around you.

The course is separated into three areas: ‘Language and the Individual’, ‘Language Varieties’ and ‘Language in Action’. Under these areas, you will investigate a wide range of text and data, such as text messages, spoken language, texts written by children and data collected about the way specific groups use language.

The course also enables you to be creative in your own use of language, with opportunities to create your own texts, investigations, discursive essays and opinion articles.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE at grade 5 or above. Students must have achieved grade 5 or above in English.

Assessment

Assessment is through two pieces of coursework (20%) and two exams (40% each). Examinations take place at the end of two years of study.

Future opportunities

A good A Level in the English Language is a valuable qualification for many different career/degree paths – an understanding of language and communication is key for any career that involves working with others or some use of writing skills, the list of which is infinite. It will also help you to become a more critical and evaluative thinker, a skill which compliments many other subject options and career/degree paths.

Students who study courses in English will be given opportunities, if available, to visit lecture-style events at local universities with specialist linguists to support their learning. We are also developing partnerships across other A Level providers to offer specialist workshops on particular aspects of the course.

The Independent Learning Centre and Post 16 iBase

Housed within the Sixth Form Centre you will find the Independent Learning Centre, or ILC, which is heavily used throughout the day by all our Sixth Form students. Here you will find a range of paper-based and electronic resources which have been specifically selected by subject staff to help support you in your independent study. If you need help with subject specific references, producing a presentation or simply in need of a photocopy then our full-time Post-16 Learning Mentor is on hand throughout the day to ensure that you are fully supported in your access to important information. Whether you need time for quiet private study or maybe some group work, the ILC provides private study booths and communal areas to allow students to work in different ways. The ILC also provides fantastic ICT facilities, with a full ICT suite, free Wi-Fi access and netbook loan. All students have access to a dedicated careers' advisor who is available to help students make decisions about their future progression.  The facilities on offer in the ILC have recently been extended to iBase which is used exclusively by Post 16 students and offers study support for all students throughout the college day.

In need of breakfast before your first lesson, a filling tasty lunch or maybe just a coffee at break time then you’ll find what you are looking for at The Lounge - our student centred café housed within the Sixth Form Centre. From subs to soup, pasta to pizzas we cater for all tastes, providing the foods that you like to eat at an affordable price.
