Level 3 Carpentry at Sussex Coast College Hastings

Course description

This course is perfect if you have successfully completed the Level 2 Site Carpentry course and wants to improve your prospects and enter the construction industry at a more qualified level.

Course content

During this advanced carpentry course you will fine tune your skills in our purpose built workshop and become adept at building and installing first and second fix fittings. You will be able to construct door frames, partition walls, roofing, floor joists and lay flooring. You will become familiar with fixed and transportable machinery and fully understand the principles of building construction. There will be opportunity to improve your employability skills during work placements before you head off and start your career as a carpenter.

You will cover topics including:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Principles of building construction
  • Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
  • Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs
  • Carry out second fixing double doors and mouldings
  • Set up and use fixed and transportable machinery 

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of: Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry and GCSE A*-D or equivalent qualification in English and maths. Good report for attendance and attitude towards work.


Assessments will take place throughout the duration of the course. Practical tasks will make up 60% of the assessment, coursework will make up 30% and 10% will be made up of exams. Accuracy and completing tasks within a specified time frame will be important to the successful completion of the course. Constructive feedback from your tutor will also help you to improve and progress towards recognised industrial standards.

Financial information

A range of specified PPE and a basic kit and equipment will be required for this course and will cost approximately £150.

The PPE required will consist of safety boots, overalls and navy/black polo shirt. There are also a number of opportunities throughout the year for various construction related trips which may also incur a cost.

Future opportunities

On completion of the course you could begin further study on a Level 4 HNC in Construction or start an Apprenticeship in Carpentry.

You may want to start your career in the industry and find roles such as a Carpenter, Site manager, Property developer or become self-employed.
