Carpentry and Joinery Level 1 Diploma at Goldwyn 6th Form College

Course description

Want to become a carpenter? Learn how to work with wood on our carpentry and Joinery course and become a professional carpenter. Want to learn the skills and knowledge to build floors, doors, windows and stairs? Then this course is ideal for learners aged 16+ who enjoy working with their hands, enjoy a practical environment and are interested in working within the construction industry.

Course content

This course allows learners to learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry and joinery. All practical activities are carried out within our state of the art workshops with the theory being a mix of classroom and practical activities.

The following areas are covered in the qualification:
- health & safety and welfare in construction
- produce woodworking joints
- principles of building construction,
- information and communication
- job planning
- maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
- geometry
- prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications are required, however, you will need a positive attitude, commitment and self-motivation. This course is designed for school leavers who are able to work at a level that is equivalent to GCSE grades A-F. Entry Level courses are also available for those who want to progress to a Level 1 qualification but do not meet these requirements.


There are continuous practical assessments, and a number of unit assessments and an end of year online exam. Theory and practical assessments for all units are carried out when you and your lecturer feel that you are capable of achieving the standards required by the industry.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course, you can progress onto a Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery. Advice on opportunities for further studies will be provided during your course.

On successful completion of this course, you could go onto our Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery, employment with further training or an Apprenticeship programme. Specialist careers advice will be available from our guidance team throughout your course.
