English Language GCSE Retake at Aquinas College

Course description

This is a one-year course which is suitable for those students who have previously gained grade 3 in GCSE English Language and who would like to achieve grade 4 or higher in this subject. The specification offers skills based approach to the study of English. This enables students to make ‘fresh’ and individual responses to each element of assessment.

Course content

Exam: 2 papers (Paper 1 – and Paper 2 – 1 or 45 minutes each)

Non-examination assessment – Speaking and Listening (An individual presentation, a paired activity and a group activity)

Students will draw upon a range of texts as reading stimulus and engage with creative as well as real and relevant contexts. Over the year, students will develop higher-order reading and critical skills, and have the opportunity to produce descriptive, narrative and discursive writing.

Future opportunities

English is a core subject and as such necessary for any student considering applying for an academic course at university. English is also valued by employers, the core skills required to succeed in the subject, such as written /oral communication, writing for a range of audiences and purposes, prioritising information and analytical interpretation, are essential skills in most workplaces.
