Level 1 City & Guilds Diploma in Beauty Therapy at Cambridge Regional College

Course description

This is a one year full time study programme in Beauty Therapy where you will gain an insight into the beauty industry. The course is designed to prepare you thoroughly for the work involved in the Level 2 Diploma programme.

- A well groomed and smart appearance is essential
- You will be working with the public therefore need to present a professional image
- Great importance is placed upon reliability - regular attendance and punctuality are essential
- You will be required to purchase a kit and uniform before the start of the programme - further details will be given at the Welcome Event.

The programme is equally based on practical and theory and will involve some aspects of level 2 in the third term.
Examples of some of the units you may study are listed below.
- Reception Skills
- Customer Care
- Facials
- Face painting
- Manicure and Pedicure
- Create an image
- Make-up - day/evening, photographic
- Health & Safety
Units will vary according to the awarding body criteria.

A long side the awarding body requirements you will complete the following:
- Passport to Success
- Work Experience
- English & Maths

Professional product training is provided to enable you to experience retailing and customer care first hand.
You will spend an evening each week in our salons, to build up you commercial experience.
As with all our full time programmes, this programme includes a tutorial session, giving you individual contact with your tutor.
There will be optional extra-curricular activities at an additional cost. These may include visits to course appropriate venues, professional workshops and services.

Entry requirements

You will need 2 GCSEs at grade E or above or successful completion of the Introduction to Beauty Therapy programme. You will need the motivation to succeed and show personal qualities required to work in the Beauty Therapy industry. Each candidate will be considered on their experience, suitability, school reference showing good attendance and behaviour.In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.

Assessment

We want you to achieve to the very best of your ability at CRC. To make this happen we offer both learning and personal support by specialist staff tailored to meet your specific needs.

The programme is delivered using various learning styles, mainly focusing on demonstration with opportunities to practise.

- You will begin by working on each other
- You may experience working on members of the public who also act as clients
- You will work within our modern, well equipped salons which provide a realistic commercial setting in which you can gain experience in dealing with clients
- Relevant theory is covered alongside the practical topic

The skills you are learning should be practised outside college in order to develop and progress, and your practical skills will be supplemented with theoretical study necessary to successfully complete the assessments. You will also need to complete some form of work experience for a minimum of 5 days.
You will need to set time aside at home to work on your portfolio.

Assessment will take place in The Park where the college's beauty salons are based.
You will have the opportunity to use an extensive range of high quality beauty products and excellent new specialist equipment.
You will be expected to demonstrate your competence in all units to the standard required in industry.

Assessment takes place throughout the programme by a variety of methods including:
- practical assessment
- oral assessment
- written assessment
- projects
- completion of a portfolio
- completion of a log book

There will be an independent assessment paper relating to treatment knowledge, which will be externally set and marked.

Future opportunities

This programme will form the basis of being able to progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy programme and therefore eventually pursue a career in the beauty field or follow an apprenticeship route.

Beauty Therapy can provide a fascinating and rewarding career if you are practical and creative and enjoy working with people. It is essentially a fashion industry where creativity and artistry combine with technical skill to provide a service for people. It is a demanding occupation which requires good health, stamina, a capacity for hard work, a pleasant personality and the ability to get on with people.
