Salford College is now offering Funcitonal Skills English

Course content

The course is designed to develop the skills of reading, writing and spoken communication. It is a one year course that is intended as a stepping stone to GCSE English. You will learn to read short pieces of writing, look at how the writers create meaning, You will develop your skills as a writer, learning how to produce short pieces of writing in a variety of styles. You will also practice your skills of spoken communication in friendly and supportive small group discussions. The course is designed to build confidence in these three key areas of Engish so that you are able to progress on to your chosen next steps.

Assessment

There will be two short examinations, one in reading and one in writing, each of which can be done online or on paper. There will also be a speaking and listening task

Future opportunities

The functional skills qualifications are available at a variety of different levels, depending on the ability of individuals. Functional skills is designed so that students progress through the levels and ultimately move on to GCSE English qualification. A wide range of careers and courses accept functional skills as evidence of your English ability
