Course content

What you will study

You will work towards the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering Pathway), which includes topics such as: Sustainable Construction, Mathematics and Further Mathematics, Surveying, Health, Safety and Welfare, Science and Materials, Construction Technology and Design, Structural Mechanics, Computer Aided Drafting and Design, Construction in Civil Engineering, the Employment Framework, Highway Construction and Maintenance, and Public Health Engineering.

You will also work towards the appropriate NVQ and Function Skills in English and Maths.

Maths and English (and sometimes IT) are key elements of apprenticeship programmes and if you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects you will be required to study Functional Skills at the appropriate levels.

Skills in Maths and English will support your apprenticeship programme, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C.  This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

Entry requirements

You must be employed within the Civil Engineering sector and hold a suitable Level 2 qualification or equivalent or to have suitable work experience.

Assessment

The Diploma will be assessed by assignment work which could take the form of a written report/task, or a presentation or practical activity that can be either individual or group based.  Other forms of assessment will include portfolio building, and (for Functional Skills) exams.
