Advanced Apprenticeship in Spa Therapy at Cambridge Regional College

Course description

The Apprenticeship programme will provide you with valuable training in all aspects of body massage, spa therapy setup and treatments, aromatherapy using pre-blended oils and Indian Head Massage techniques. You will need to be employed in a suitable salon, which is willing to support you in gaining this nationally recognised qualification. This programme is fully funded for 16-18 age groups, and partially funded for the 19+ age group.

ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP FRAMEWORK
The Framework is made up of the following components. In order to be successful you must complete and achieve all elements.

• MAIN NVQ
The full NVQ in Spa Therapy at Level 3 consists of 8 units which you will need to complete fully to achieve the full qualification.  
Examples of the units are listed below:
• Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
• Promote additional products or services to clients
• Monitor client and the operation of sauna, steam and hydrotherapy treatments
• Provide body wrapping and flotation treatments
• Provide stone therapy treatments
• Provide body massage
• Provide Indian Head Massage
• Carry out massage using pre-blended aromatherapy oils

• FUNCTIONAL SKILLS
Communications Level 2 English
Application of Number Level 2 Maths

• EMPLOYMENT RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS & EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY
This is an assignment based on evidence collection

• PERSONAL LEARNING AND THINKING SKILLS

You will need a salon uniform and will be advised with regard to the kit required.  There will also be a £40 fee to cover trips and activities.

Entry requirements

You will be interviewed as part of the admissions process which will include communication screener to ensure you have the necessary educational and language skills to complete a Level 3 course.  You will need to have achieved the NVQ Level 2 Diploma qualification or equivalent within the beauty industry and be currently employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a spa environment running a column of clients.   The successful applicants will be expected to show the personal qualities required for working in the spa therapy industry.

Assessment

You will be observed carrying out commercial activities mainly in the workplace but also in our modern, well-equipped salons within the College, which provide a realistic commercial setting in which you can gain experience in dealing with clients.   You will have the opportunity to use an extensive range of high quality beauty products and excellent specialist equipment.

You will be expected to demonstrate your competence in all units to the standard required in industry.
Assessment takes place throughout the programme by a variety of methods including :
• practical assessment
• oral assessment
• written assessment
• projects
• completion of a portfolio
• completion of a log book
There will be independent assessment papers relating to treatment knowledge.

Future opportunities

The programme provides you with a Level 3 qualification and the skills necessary for your career in Spa Therapy.  It will open up career opportunities for employment in the supervisory aspect of Spa Therapy.  There is the possibility of Management Apprenticeships/Retail and Customer Service Apprenticeship Training/Assessing and Quality Assurance qualifications. Short course in Management and Professional qualifications.
