Childcare Award Level 2 at Leicester College

Course description

This is an award programme designed to support learners who wish to progress from level 1 but who have not gained the necessary English and maths grades to start a full level 2 certificate (EYE) course. It comprises of three different childcare short courses (1 per term) as well as the standard study programme structure of including English and maths at the right level to allow progression to a full level 2 certificate in childcare. The emphasis is on the functional skills and ensuring that learners can carry on with their studies to become fully qualified early years practitioners. There is also a placement element as well as the Tutorial and LEAP sessions. If you are aged 16-18 you will be enrolled on a student programme (for learners progressing internally from Level 1 Health, Social Care and Childcare this will include retaking functional skills or GCSEs in English and Maths if you have not already achieved a grade 4 or above). You will also be required to complete a work placement. Finally, you will also undertake an employability programme.

Course content

The course comprises of three childcare short courses: CACHE level 2 award in supporting individuals with learning difficulties; CACHE level 2 award in prevention and control of infection and finally CACHE level 2 introducing caring for children and young people. Learners will be expected to complete 100 hours in placement. Also English and maths at functional skills level 2 is an important part of the course.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 3 (D) or above is required. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.


Assessment is via coursework. You will need to evidence in your work that your skills and understanding are sufficient to pass each unit or achieve the higher grades. There are no traditional exams, but you will be expected to demonstrate professional competency in your work placement.

Financial information

Material fee £150.00. The materials fee of £150.00 is payable by all learners regardless of financial position. Tuition fees are applicable for anyone aged 19+ and the fees are £950. If you are 19+ you will need to pay £44.00 for the Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) check, which is a requirement in order to complete the mandatory work placement element of this course.

Future opportunities

This course is designed to allow progression to a full level 2 certificate (EYE). While it serves as an entry qualification to either health and social care courses or childcare courses, it must be recognised that the course does not give an assistant licence to practice and cannot be used to enter employment in the sector.
