Course description

This is a level 1 course that explores the world of caring professions. The course allows you to develop an awareness of the sector as a whole, as well as improving your English and maths skills. Whilst on the course you will explore the different jobs associated with working in caring professions and develop both your personal and social skills. In addition to your main vocational qualification you will also have an opportunity to improve your English and maths skills and knowledge by attending modules of study in both subjects. This is an excellent course that is designed specifically to prepare you for further learning and provide you with the knowledge to help you decide your future career pathway. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course content

During this programme you will study a range of topics that include: service provisions; the principles and values of the caring profession; safeguarding children and young people; person centred support; development of children through play and understanding the importance of engagement in leisure and social activities in health and social care, to list just a few.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 1/2 (E/F/G) or above is required. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.


Assessment is by continuous assessment for your main vocational qualification and for English and maths there are set externally assessed exams for both subjects.

Financial information

Material fee £150.00. The materials fee of £150.00 is payable by all learners regardless of financial position. Tuition fees are applicable for anyone aged 19+ and the fees are £950. If you are aged 19+ you will need to pay £44.00 for the Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) check, which is a requirement in order to complete the mandatory work placement element of this course.

Future opportunities

Successful completion of this course will enable you to progress onto a level 2 course in either health and social care or childcare, providing you have achieved a level 2 Functional Skill in both English and maths or a GCSE level 3 (Grade D). Alternatively you could progress onto an Apprenticeship.
