Business (Retail) BTEC Diploma level 3 at Leicester College
If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.This is a two year study programme (18 units) which incorporates retail units, that is designed to provide you with the opportunity to study a wide range of business subjects. If you are interested in how retail organisations operate within the retail sector, then this course provides you with the opportunity to learn about how organisations operate within the sector and how this fast paced industry reacts to the ever changing demand from the consumer. The extended diploma is equivalent to three a levels; both are ideal for those looking to progress on to higher education or further training within the retail sector.
The course is made up of four mandatory business units which develop your core business skills and knowledge. The remaining units required to complete the qualification are specialist, and focus entirely upon the retail sector ensuring that you gain a wider understanding of the world of retail. This course is designed to advance your skills and knowledge enhancing your career prospects within the retail sector. Through a range of learning activities and visits to retail organisations and events, you will also enhance your interpersonal skills, and develop your study skills to allow for progression to university or higher level courses. There is also the opportunity to take part in a residential study visit. If you progress onto the second year of the programme (year 1 is a qualification in its own right - BTEC 90 Credit Diploma) you will study further units such as; Visual Merchandising, Human Resource Management and Starting a Small Business.
Standard entry to this course requires reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance in your last place of study or work. Five GCSE's at grade 4(C) or above including English and maths are required. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.
There are a variety of assessment methods such as report writing, PowerPoint presentations, displays, live projects, event organisation and role-playing.

Upon completion of the two year programme this course will give a broad base in business related topics that can be further pursued at either university or employment. You will have the opportunity to apply for our Higher National Diploma in Business Management where you can progress onto the 3rd year of your degree programme at De Montfort University. Alternatively you may decide to pursue an apprenticeship. There are a range of careers available within the retail sector, including trainee manager, supervisor, or merchandiser.
