Public Services Diploma level 2 at Leicester College

Course description

This qualification is aimed at people who are hoping to gain an insight into the roles and activities of the uniformed public services, and the skills required for entry into these organisations. It can also help develop the knowledge and skills required in both academic and practical disciplines, enabling learners to progress either in education or employment. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course content

The BTEC level 2 diploma in public services consists of a variety of practical and theoretical units. These units include: the role and work of the public services; citizenship and diversity; improving health and fitness and an outdoor expedition unit. You will also be required to study Functional Skills or GCSE in English and maths where applicable.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 3 (D) or above is required, plus 2 additional GCSE subjects at Grade 3 (D) or above. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.


Most of the units are assessed through on going coursework, such as written essays, presentations, verbal interview or practical assessment. Both unit 1 The Role and Work of Public Services and Unit 6 Citizenship are assessed by exam.

Material fee £120.00. During Interview we will discuss costs to purchase Uniform.

Future opportunities

Upon successful completion, learners may choose to progress on to the BTEC level 3 Diploma in Public Services or other level 3 courses providing you meet their entry requirements. You can progress directly into certain areas of the uniformed public services depending on their recruitment criteria. Whilst studying the course learner's can enrol as Police cadets giving valuable experience in this field.
