Painting and Decorating Diploma level 3 at Leicester College

Course description

This course is designed to offer progression from the level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating, and will allow learners to further develop and practice the skills required for employment and/or career as a painter and decorator in the construction sector. You must supply safety footwear/clothing and an identified tool kit. Technical drawing equipment and stationery are also necessary. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course content

The level 3 qualification helps you to gain a wide range of specialist skills in painting and decorating so you can work as an advanced craft painter and decorator. You will take seven compulsory units in: Principles of organising; planning and pricing construction work; erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms; applying hangings to walls and ceilings; producing specialist finishes for painted decorative work; installing specialist architectural finishes for decorative work; Applying water-borne paint systems using airless equipment; applying water-borne paint systems using high volume low pressure spray equipment. The units are designed so that you learn all the practical skills involved, as well as getting an overview of how to organise and price work. As most of the work in this area means that you have to work at heights, learning how to use equipment and working platforms safely, along with erecting and dismantling them, is essential.

Entry requirements

1 reference. Desirable 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 or above (C). Progressing learners will need to have previously attained a level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating plus an additional two GCSEs at grade 3 or above including a science.


To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully achieve the following assessments:€¢ One externally set, externally moderated assignment€¢ One externally set, externally marked exam, sat under examination conditions.

Financial information

Material fee £150.00. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) plus an identified tool kit will require purchasing. Individuals will also require stationery. There is a materials fee applicable to this course.

Future opportunities

It can lead to a construction apprenticeship programme or a level 3 NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing €“ Painting and Decorating (Construction). On completion of the apprenticeship you will be competent as an advanced craft painter and decorator. If you wish to progress to become a supervisor working on site, you may wish to study a qualification in the built environment, such as the Higher National Certificate in construction.
