Painting and Decorating Diploma level 1 at Leicester College

Course description

This qualification is aimed at learners aged 16 and above who work or want to work in the construction industry and specialise in the area of painting and decorating to progress on to becoming skilled in their chosen trade, or to progress through an apprenticeship and work towards becoming a master craftsman. You must supply safety footwear and clothing. Technical drawing equipment and stationery are necessary. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course content

This is a mainly practical course introducing you to a variety of skills within painting and decorating; preparation of surfaces, scaffolding, water and oil based painting, basic wall papering and health and safety. You will produce a folder of work to show both practical and theoretical skills on completion of this course. Assessment will include unit tests for both theory and practical plus external examinations.

Entry requirements

1 reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 1/2 or above (E/F/G).


Multiple choice question papers, covering knowledge outcomes. Practical assignments, covering performance outcomes. Both assessments are set by City & Guilds, delivered and marked by the tutor/assessor, and will be externally verified by City & Guilds to make sure they are properly carried out.

Financial information

Material fee £75.00. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) plus an identified tool kit will require purchasing. There is a materials fee applicable to this course. The residential programme is subject to a fee of approximately £50. A fee reduction may be available.

Future opportunities

This qualification helps prepare you for work in the construction industry, with a specific focus on painting and decorating. You are likely to progress on to the level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating. You can then progress on to study the NVQ, either as part of an apprenticeship, or as a standalone qualification
