Bench Joinery Diploma level 2 at Leicester College

Course description

This course is designed to offer progression from the Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery, and will allow learners to further develop and practice the skills required for employment and/or career as a bench joiner in the construction sector.You must supply safety footwear/clothing and an identified tool kit. Technical drawing equipment and stationery are also necessary. If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme.

Course content

The level 2 qualification typically comprises of the following core units: Health, safety and welfare in construction (this unit can be carried forward from Level 1) and principles of building construction, information and communication. The following subject specialist units are also studied: Set up and operate a circular saw; produce setting out details for bench joinery products; mark out from setting out details for bench joinery products; manufacture bench joinery products.

Entry requirements

1 reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 3 or above (D). Progressing learners will need to have previously attained a Level 1 Diploma in Wood Occupations plus maths and English at grade 2 minimum or the equivalent Functional Skills. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.


Multiple choice question papers, covering knowledge outcomes. Practical assignments, covering performance outcomes. Assessments are set by City & Guilds, delivered and marked by the tutor/assessor, and will be externally verified by City & Guilds to make sure they are properly carried out.

Financial information

Material fee £100.00. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) plus an identified tool kit will require purchasing. Individuals will also require stationery. There is a materials fee applicable to this course.

Future opportunities

This qualification helps prepare you for work in the construction industry specialising in the bench joinery area, with a specific focus on wood occupations. You are likely to progress on the a level 3 Diploma in Bench Joinery, or progress on to study on an apprenticeship programme, including level 2 NVQ.
