Information Technology (Networking) BTEC Diploma level 3 at Leicester College
If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme. This is a two year study programme that will develop your skills and prepare you for a career in the field of IT, Web design, computer Networks or associated industries. During the course you will develop skills in the use of industry standard software packages including Visual Studio and Adobe Creative Suite.
During the first year of the programme you will study the following subjects: Communication and Employability Skills, E-Commerce, Procedural Programming , Website Production, Computer Systems, Networking, Database Design and IT Technical Support. In addition to the main course content there is Maths and English and work experience as both of these are important for applying to either university, apprenticeships and employment. In the second year of this courses you will continue to study units that will provide you with knowledge of a wide range of different subjects within the IT sector.
Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.
Assessment is via coursework completed over two years. You will need to evidence in your work that your skills and understanding are sufficient to pass each unit or achieve higher grades. Grades are pass, merit and distinction. If you have a disability you may be allowed additional time to complete the examination. On successful completion of the two year programme you will have achieved an equivalent to three A levels and so will enable progression to a higher education course at university or to a HND at Leicester College. There could also be employment opportunities in trainee positions within programming, IT support, network administration and support or you could progress onto an IT and Telecoms Professional Apprenticeship.
