Games Development 90 Credit Diploma level 3 at Leicester College

Course description

Gaming is very big business, beloved by many around the world. Triple-A blockbusters earn far more than any other entertainment medium, and with mobile gaming prevalent, even small teams can sell millions. From a single indie developer, to teams of thousands working on a single title, games require so many skills and commitments, and we want o start you on your career path. We'll cover fundamentals in areas like Unity, but also transferable C#, HTML5 programming skills in web and mobile development, together with making sure you're aware of all emerging technologies for the rapidly-evolving technical world.

Course content

During the first year of the programme you will study fundamentals in computing and programming - whether games driven of not. You'll also code, design, develop, and look at other areas like graphics, animation, web design and more. Year 1 will give you a qualification, but the full level 3 extended diploma requires a 2nd year of study. The topics studied in year one will be built upon and developed even further during year two of the programme, working on games that you can publish and some extended projects that bring in all aspects of your course, for you to manage and show.

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required, together with two other relevant GCSEs at 4 (C) or above. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.


Assessment is over a number of units, via coursework and official external examinations. The units have different 'weightings' and some elements are compulsory to study, to meet BTEC requirements across all IT courses. You will need to evidence in your work that your skills and understanding are sufficient to pass each unit or achieve higher grades such as merit and distinction.

Material fee £40.00. Trip fees will be payable in year as and when trips are organised.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you could enter employment into games design, games development, animation or design roles. You will have achieved an equivalent to three A levels and so will enable progression to a higher education course at university or to a HND at Leicester College. There could also be employment opportunities in trainee positions within programming.
