Information Technology BTEC Introductory Diploma level 1 at Leicester College

Course description

If you are aged 16-18, you will be enrolled on a study programme, which will include retaking GCSEs or undertaking Functional Skills in English and maths if you haven't already achieved a grade 4 or above. You will also be required to complete a work experience placement and an employability programme. Designed to be taken over one year, giving you the opportunity to develop a range of skills in the IT sector and supporting progression on to further study. The introductory course will help you develop a wide range of skills including problem solving, communication and research, to prepare you for the next level of study. You will develop your understanding of digital communication technologies, explore website design and spreadsheets and learn how to develop computer programs.

Course content

Core Units Unit A1 - Being Organised Unit A2 - Developing a Personal Progression Plan Unit A3 - Working with others Unit A4 - Researching a Topic Alongside your main programme of study you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skills in English and maths if you have not achieved a GCSE grade C or above. If you have achieved a grade C or above in GCSE English and maths, you will engage in extending these skills through a Directed Study Programme. There is also an opportunity to undertake work experience. Optional Units Solving Technical IT Problems Creating a Spreadsheet to Solve Problems Creating a Website Creating a Computer Program Developing a Digital Product Creating a Digital Animated Graphics

Entry requirements

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 1/2 (E/F/G) or above is required. Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.


Assessment is via coursework completed over one year. You will need to evidence in your work that your skills and understanding are sufficient to pass each unit or achieve higher grades. If you have a disability you may be allowed additional time to complete the examination. If you have particular study requirements please tell us as soon as possible.

Financial information

Material fee £90.00. Trip fees will be payable in year as and when trips are organised. You will need to top up your printing credits during the year to print your work out.

Future opportunities

Learners who have successfully completed and achieved this course may wish to apply for the BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Information and Creative Technology course. The BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Information and Creative Technology course is a one year course which once completed will lead to progressing on to the BTEC level 3 courses.
